Betabrand’s lead designer, Steven B Wheeler, had the opportunity of a lifetime to become part of the media tour at Kennedy Space Station for the SpaceX Launch to resupply the International Space Station. Although he did not actually go to space, this was as close as Steven could get to experiencing outer space. Growing up as the ultimate space geek, Steven has always been intrigued with space flight and went on to design the Betabrand Space-Inspired Primaloft Space Jacket as a tribute to the continuing legacy of American spaceflight. During the tour, Steven took several shots at Kennedy Space Center and shared his photographs with us.
The unveiling of Orion, NASA’s new exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations in deep space, which had just arrived back to earth in the Pacific Ocean from orbital testing.
Detailed shots of Space Shuttle Atlantis, which is the very inspiration of his Space Jacket, with the quilted lines of stitching echoing the paneled surface of the spacecraft. Fun fact: Atlantis has orbited the Earth a total of 4,848 times, traveling nearly 126,000,000 mi (203,000,000 km) or more than 525 times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
“There is nothing more heroic to me than the image of a NASA astronaut, someone with the courage, intelligence, and stamina to ride a pillar of explosives into space,” said Steven. He hopes his Space Jacket would eventually serve as an actual flight jacket for present-day astronauts on missions to the ISS. But for us earth dwellers, the Space Jacket would still be completely wearable and well-suited for land (see photo of Antarctic Explorer Jeffrey Donenfeld). And here’s more good news: Steven just designed three incredible astronaut-inspired prototypes into the crowdfunding cosmos, each made from Tyvek and other space-age materials: Space Booties, the Space Messenger Bag, and the long-anticipated Women’s Space Jacket, to go with the original men’s version.
