Recently we launched Noemi Garcia’s Popshop Convert-A-Skirt Overalls into our crowdfunding platform. We also sat down with Noemi to learn more about her and the inspiration behind her convertible skirt/overalls/purse concept.
Tell us a bit more about yourself.
My name is Noemi Garcia and I was worn in Barcelona but lived for many years in London. During my time there I combined my passion for vintage fashion, pop culture, and music with several different jobs. Since moving to San Francisco last year, I have dedicated myself full time to following my vintage and fashion dream and I created Popshop together with my friend and business partner Sara.
At Popshop we hunt out unique and hard-to-find vintage clothing, both to sell on our online boutique and also to style our clients for special occasions. Besides Popshop I also organize and promote a club night called the Acid Test, which is a psychedelic happening with live bands, liquid light projections, and dj’s spinning obscure 60s records. I am a culture lover so I try to support and promote all the fantastic and exciting things that happen in this great city that is San Francisco!
What/who inspired you to make this garment? What’s the history of your idea?
As lover of pop art, fashion and vintage clothing, I am always looking for timeless, fun, and unique pieces with that special detail that truly makes them a “must have”. At Popshop we sell unique and rare vintage pieces, but this combination can be quite challenging to find if you don’t have a big budget so that is why I decided to create a special affordable and multiuse late 60’s early 70’s inspired overall for Betabrand.
What problem does your concept solve? What powers does it have? What’s the need?
The Popshop Convert-A-Skirt overall is a three-in-one set: The super cute overalls can be turned into a pretty skirt giving you two totally different outfits just for the price of one! The top part of the overalls can also be converted into a shoulder bag to match with your skirt or any other outfits. How can you resist?
Who should want to buy it and why?
The Popshop Convert-A-Skirt overalls is a statement in itself and will become a fun and timeless staple, perfect for anyone’s closet, from the young woman on a budget to the savvy fashionista who recognizes the concept from 60s/70s pieces that are impossible to find.
What is your experience with making designing clothes?
When I was a child, I used to constantly draw girls with really long legs wearing my dream outfits! As I grew older and developed my passion for vintage fashion, I started to design pieces I imagined but couldn’t find in stores. I have been designing my own clothes since I was a teenager. I learned a lot from my mom, who is really good at sewing and sometimes would make me dresses in less than a day! I always wanted to study fashion design but never had the funds to do it so all my life I just designed pieces for my personal use. I’m thrilled to finally get to share my passion!
Why did you think to come to Betabrand for the production of your garment
Betabrand actually came to me. I was doing a Popshop event at Heroine boutique in Noe Valley and Julia Marino walked in. We had never met her before but we bonded over vintage clothes and she asked me if we were selling any of our own designs. We exchanged emails and images of clothes I had done in the past and she liked them enough to encourage me to submit this design. The rest is history!
